The author, born in Donostia and living in Ormaiztegi for the past decade, studied film and television screenwriting and worked for many years as a creator in the video game industry. However, writing has been her passion since childhood, and she published her first novel, El secreto de la Belle Nuit, in 2007. Since then, she has written several more novels, with Lo nuestro being her eleventh.
This new novel differs from her previous works, although it also contains elements of mystery. The writer has stated that in the last four years she has lost four fundamental people in her life, including her parents, and the emotions derived from these losses – anger, impotence, a feeling of orphanhood – are reflected in the work. She describes it as a more intimate, seductive novel with a magical touch, possessing a musicality that connects with the emotions experienced.
“"Darkness and night appear in the book, as do myths and legends."
The story is set in Goierri, more specifically in Zerain, although the novel uses the name Barbari, a neighborhood of Zerain. Although the initial intention was to address the topic of mines, the final plot took a different direction. Set in the 18th century, the culture of the farmhouse, its roots, and its importance in that society are the central themes. At that time, people were not known by their surname, but by the name of their farmhouse, which underscores the close connection between the farmhouse and society.
Superstitions and mythology also play a significant role in the story, which unfolds in a rural environment where the unknown was feared. Darkness, night, myths, and legends are present, and these beliefs greatly influenced daily life. The main plot begins when young girls start disappearing from their homes in the village of Barbari, despite rituals and Eguzkilore placed to protect the homes. Faced with this situation, a young priest arrives in the village and encounters difficulties in solving the mystery, as the inhabitants are accustomed to resolving problems within their homes.
The writer has indicated that the novel is a very choral story, with many characters in addition to the main protagonist, each with their own story. She has used these characters to better portray farmhouse life and the superstitions and myths. Before writing the book, she conducted extensive research, using books on the customs and structures of Zerain farmhouses and the mythological investigations of Joxe Miel Barandiaran as primary sources of inspiration. It took her three years to complete the novel.
Lo nuestro has been self-published because publishers wanted another eco-thriller, but the writer does not repeat stories. She dislikes being pigeonholed into a single literary genre or the corrections from agencies, and felt she owed respect to this novel, believing that changes would be a betrayal of herself. Therefore, it is available on the Amazon platform, both in print and electronic versions.
