Legazpi has expressed its support for Cuba through a solidarity campaign that has already collected 5,600 euros to aid the William Soler pediatric hospital in Havana. This citizen initiative aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by the Cuban people due to the economic blockade imposed by the U.S. Government, particularly addressing the electricity shortage that poses a significant challenge to the healthcare system.
Under the banner 'Legazpitik Argia Kubari' (Light from Legazpi to Cuba), several residents have joined the effort. In collaboration with the association Euskadi-Kubarekin, two large solar photovoltaic energy systems will be purchased and installed at the hospital. The organizers have highlighted the "very important" solidarity response to the campaign and have thanked all individuals, shops, bars, and institutions in Legazpi for their contributions.
To raise further funds and raise awareness about Cuba's situation, several events are planned for the coming days. Today, the association Hotz Legazpi will sell solidarity pintxos (tapas) made with potato tortillas on Kale Nagusia, as part of the Udafest festival organized by Ilinti. Local writers will also be present, distributing books for the cause.
Next week, on Thursday, July 16th, a gathering has been called for 7:00 PM in Kale Nagusia (in front of the Rural Kutxa offices) to express solidarity with the Cuban people and denounce the blockade. Following this, on Saturday, July 25th, a solidarity festival will be held on Nafarroa street, starting at 12:30 PM, featuring musical performances and Cuban food and drinks.
