Amorebieta-Etxano has unveiled its Municipal Sports and Physical Activity Plan until 2040. This document will organize the municipal work lines to be developed in the coming years in the field of sports and physical activity, establishing a roadmap to address the needs of citizens and sports stakeholders.
The plan, presented by Mayor Ainhoa Salterain, states that "Amorebieta-Etxano is committed to sports. We manage a broad network of services and facilities for sports practice; a network that functions well, but which we want to continue improving to make it increasingly accessible to all citizens."
The document includes an in-depth analysis of the municipality's sports reality: 35 sports facilities, 30 sports clubs, approximately 2,000 registered athletes, and 5,290 subscribers at the Larrea sports center. A citizen participation process was also conducted, receiving 461 responses in the "From Dreams to the Street" process to understand user needs and feedback.
Regarding facilities, several interventions are planned: the expansion of the Larrea gym (increasing from 404 m² to 757 m², with around 125 machines), the replacement of the current padel courts with two new covered courts, and the renovation of the Txolon football field (changing artificial turf, goals, seats, and new safety elements, followed by changing room renovations). Additionally, a new multipurpose space, Urgozo, will be built to host sports and cultural activities.
To promote outdoor physical activity, outdoor training areas, walking, running, or cycling routes, and new bicipaths and cycle lanes are foreseen. "Activating the street for sports practice is another of the work lines included in the Plan," noted Salterain, highlighting the success of the calisthenics facility in Jauregibarria Park.
The plan also focuses on ensuring real access to sports practice, identifying barriers such as schedules, costs, accessibility, and information, particularly for families, the elderly, women, and vulnerable groups. Furthermore, it foresees the creation of a stable working network with sports clubs, establishing coordination mechanisms and sharing information.
