This initiative stems from the work undertaken by students in Irun during the 2025/26 academic year as part of the Agenda Escolar 2030 program. Approximately 3,000 students from seven schools have engaged in classroom discussions on Responsible Production and Consumption (SDG 12) and analyzed the local reality to propose improvements.
While secondary school students conducted clean-ups in various city areas, this campaign's proposal originates from Primary Education students, specifically from Txingudi HLHI and Toki Alai HLHI schools. Among their key points are supporting local businesses and markets, reducing plastic use, favoring local and seasonal products, promoting second-hand goods, and increasing the visibility of local commerce. Their conclusions were based on a clear idea: responsible consumption is in our hands, and our daily decisions have a fundamental impact on our environment.
Sergio Javier, the delegate for Sustainable Development, accompanied by involved stakeholders, emphasized that "this campaign serves to value the perspective of our young people, demonstrating that sustainability is also built upon our daily decisions. It's clear that Irun's youth understand this well. Now is the time to listen to them and take action."
The presentation included representatives from the Primary Education centers Txingudi HLHI and Toki Alai HLHI, including Agenda Escolar 2030 coordinators and some students. Their presence reinforces a core campaign principle: giving voice and recognition to the students' work, enabling them to convey their learnings and proposals to the city.
Through this campaign, the Irun City Council continues and publicizes the work of the schools, bringing their reflections to the wider community. The campaign is structured around three ideas from the students' work—Km0, second-hand, and seasonal products—and applies them to the city's daily reality. It involves three young residents of Irun and three local establishments: Heladería Yon Gallardo, Zebra Store & Gallery, and Labore Txingudi, who are featured in the campaign's imagery.
This is an accessible and positive initiative focusing on small, achievable decisions for everyone, such as shopping locally, choosing seasonal products, or giving a second life to items.
The campaign will also feature an audiovisual piece where students and teachers will explain the project and outline the main conclusions and actions to promote sustainable consumption in the municipality.
This initiative reflects the Irun City Council's commitment to promoting responsible consumption habits and moving towards a more sustainable city, involving the educational community, the general public, and local businesses. It has a forward-looking approach, as from November, establishments in Irun wishing to participate can join, thus expanding the campaign's presence throughout the city.
To this end, the "We Get It Here. We Are Sustainable." distinctive has been created, identifying participating establishments and highlighting their firm commitment to more sustainable consumption.
