Schoolchildren from Legazpi visited the Town Hall this Wednesday to present their work on climate shelters as part of the School Agenda 2030 Forum. They were received by the mayor, Eric Gálvez, the sustainability councilor, Óscar Valbuena, and municipal technicians, who highlighted the students' commitment to the environment.
The students' objective was to analyze the citizenry's climate adaptation. Through surveys, they concluded that "more information and awareness were needed about climate shelters, especially among the most vulnerable groups." Based on their analysis, they designed concrete actions: they completed a map of climate shelters, creating clear information for citizens, and plan to visit elderly residences to provide explanations and recommendations. An inter-school forum has also been organized to share experiences.
It was highlighted that "one of the strong points of the project has been precisely the collaboration between schools," where students and teachers have unified different perspectives and methodologies.
The Town Hall also informed the students that they have been working on climate shelters and will launch two new initiatives this year: an outdoor climate shelter network offering shade, water, and rest areas in public spaces, and the adaptation of the Social Center as a pilot climate shelter.
Finally, the schoolchildren invited municipal representatives and the general public to the 'Climate Fair' on June 5th, where they will present their climate shelter project and other ongoing sustainable initiatives in the town.
