The aim of this project is to understand the consequences of the 1936 war, and wars in general, through the experiences of children, fostering historical memory, empathy, human rights, and peace values. For this purpose, theater has been used as the main tool to portray and express the testimonies of several children from the war era.
Various educational centers from Euskal Herria have participated in this initiative, giving it a participatory character: Juan Orobiogoitia from Iurreta, Ikasbidea from Durango, Fray Juan de Zumarraga from Durango, and Ibarrekolanda from Bilbao. Students have worked in teams, learning, interpreting, and staging these testimonies. Through this process, they have developed both artistic expression and critical reflection.
Throughout the process, students have created various resources that will be displayed at the end of the academic year. Additionally, a group of volunteer students will participate in the show resulting from the work done, prepared collaboratively by all participating schools. This will be the moment to bring the project's content to the stage. The young people from Iparragirre will be responsible for dramatizing the testimonies of war children. These performances will be a unique opportunity to witness the students' work and share the project's meaning with the public, families, and peers. The script was written by author Joseba Sarrionandia.
This initiative is promoted by the Intxorta Association and has been developed throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. These young people have spent months preparing with theater experts Oier Agirre and Nerea Lizarralde, and as the performances approach, they have intensified their rehearsals. The premiere will take place at the Clara Campoamor theater in Barakaldo, on Friday, April 24, at 7:00 PM. Afterwards, the performance will be taken to Donostia, Gasteiz, and Gernika.
There will be four performances in total:
