The Department of Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge of the Basque Government has organized the Family Mobile-Free Day in the three Basque capitals for Saturday, April 18th. In San Sebastián, the event will take place in Okendo Square, where a space will be set up with various free activities for playing, conversing, and enjoying time without screens.
The main objective of this initiative is to promote the emotional and relational well-being of families, raise awareness about the impact of mobile phone use on daily coexistence, and foster a positive digital orientation. This day is exclusively aimed at families and seeks to strengthen shared agreements within the family unit.
“"In a hyperconnected world, the mobile phone is part of our daily lives. It informs us, connects us, and facilitates many tasks. But sometimes, without realizing it, it also distances us from those closest to us."
Families will have the option to deposit their mobile phones in a secure and supervised bag to experience time without the device for an agreed number of hours. Additionally, the Department will provide a document titled 'Family Commitment' for families who wish to sign it to express their commitment to a more conscious use of technology.
The spaces in Donostia's Okendo Square will be open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM continuously. Qualified staff with training in family or community intervention and proficiency in both Basque and Spanish will be present to create a climate of trust and adapt the dynamics to the diversity of family realities in Euskadi.
