According to Bertsozale Elkartea, the competition is named in honor of Teodoro Hernandorena Barandiaran (1898-1994), a prominent Basque politician and cultural promoter from Zizurkil who moved to Donibane Lohitzune after the 1936 War. In the Northern Basque Country, he continued his cultural work and made significant efforts to promote bertsolarism, bringing bertsolaris like Mattin Treku and Fernando Aire 'Xalbador' to public stages.
This competition aims to provide young bertsolaris under 25 with an opportunity to gain experience in a friendly environment, outside the intense competition of larger tournaments. The first edition took place twenty years ago and has been held continuously since then.
This year's edition will feature twelve young bertsolaris: Nahia Etxeberri Lopepe (Ainhize-Monjolose), Pagoa Bidart Hirigoien (Hazparne), Araitz Katarain Mugerza (Mallabia), Josu Txoperena Iribarren (Hendaia), Kattin Madariaga Apaolaza (Arantza), Danel Herrarte Nafarrete (Aramaio), Irati Alcantarilla Urdanpilleta (Urruña), Irantzu Idoate Funosas (Hazparne), Sabin Abarrategi Sarrionaindia (Aramaio), Johane Larre Salaberri (Baiona), June Aiestaran Iparragirre (Beasain), and Izaro Bilbao Arostegi (Mungia).
The first qualifying session will be held on Saturday at the Auzteia restaurant in Pagola, at 7:00 PM, featuring performances by Nahia Etxeberri, Pagoa Bidart, Araitz Katarain, Josu Txoperena, Kattin Madariaga, and Danel Herrarte. Aritz Bidegain will be the topic setter. The second session will take place on April 24 at the Enbata youth center in Hendaia (Lapurdi), at 7:30 PM, and the final will be held on May 9, the eve of Herri Urrats day, in the Latsa room in Uztaritze (Lapurdi), at 7:00 PM.
