The Provincial Council of Bizkaia will allocate 2.6 million euros (including VAT) to enhance safety at a hazardous section of the BI-2701 road in the Mercadillo neighborhood of Sopuerta, which has seen around twenty accidents in the past decade.
Currently, the road features uneven terrain, gradient changes, and poor visibility, with several intersections, including the one connecting Muskiz to Malabrigo and the access to the Puerto de las Muñecas in Cantabria. The new roundabout will reorganize traffic and significantly improve safety.
This project, announced last year by the then Deputy for Infrastructure and Territorial Development, Imanol Pradales (now the Lehendakari), involves the construction of a roundabout with an external diameter of 36 meters and five branches. The project has recently been put out to tender and is estimated to take 15 months to complete.
In addition to the roundabout, the pedestrian route between the access to El Hoyo and the old BI-3601 will be widened with new sidewalks and a pedestrian crossing. Space will also be created for buses at the existing stop, which will be equipped with a shelter. The area's lighting will be improved with the installation of nearly twenty LED streetlights for energy efficiency.
