A fire has completely devastated the iconic wooden viewpoint situated at Ilso Eguen in Zalla, a structure that had become a symbol for the municipality. The Ertzaintza (Basque Police) has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the incident.
This viewpoint tower, erected in 2019, was part of an initiative to enhance the Eguen forest area and promote its social use. It was designed to resemble old forest watchtowers and was located at a strategic point for observing the Cadagua valley.
Standing six meters tall, the viewpoint offered spectacular panoramic views of Zalla, Güeñes, the mountains of Galdames, and as far as Balmaseda. It was situated in a historic surveillance spot, near the former aviation strip of Ilso Eguen connecting to Gordexola.
The infrastructure, intended for public enjoyment of the landscape and wildlife, was promoted by the Zalla City Council and the Forestry Service of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. Its construction was funded by resources allocated for the repair and maintenance of public mountain facilities.
