Heat will be the main protagonist of this year's San Juan's Eve, and in response, the Azpeitia City Council has implemented new measures. The bonfires to be lit in both locations, the town square and Urrestilla, will be smaller to protect citizens' health and prevent heatstroke.
The event in the town square will start at 22:00, while in Urrestilla, the bonfire will be lit around midnight. In both cases, the fire will be surrounded by a fence, and citizens will not be allowed to cross it or throw objects into the fire. Furthermore, the council has prohibited lighting fires in rural areas.
The institution has taken this measure to avoid endangering the health of the citizens.
Due to the extremely high temperatures, the Basque Government has declared a red alert for tomorrow and the day after. Consequently, tomorrow, Tuesday, market stalls in the town square will be taken down at 11:30, while those in the Azoka Plaza will maintain their usual hours.
Additionally, during the days of the red alert, the Basazabal Palace will remain open until 22:00 and the Church of San Sebastián de Soreasu until 20:00 (except in case of funerals), to offer protection from the heat to citizens. The council has also recommended carefully following the advice for dealing with the heat.
