This weekend marked the tenth edition of the Shelter 4Teens championship, taking place near Borghetto, with a total of 174 surfers participating. This year's event was particularly special, featuring an enhanced open category to celebrate its anniversary, alongside the traditional youth and adaptive surf competitions, including sixteen prominent surfers from previous editions.
The open category heats commenced on Friday, culminating in the finals on Saturday afternoon, which attracted considerable attention. In the women's division, Lucia Machado from the Canary Islands secured the win, while in the men's division, Iker Amatriain from Zarautz emerged victorious. Both champions received a prize of 1,500 euros. The runners-up, Nora Alvarez and Hans Odriozola, each took home 1,000 euros.
The under-14 category also showcased a high level of talent from surfers representing the Basque Country, Spain, and international participants. In the girls' division, Martina Pertega from Asturias was the winner, and in the boys' division, Ruben Husson from the Guadalupe Islands took first place. Furthermore, eight finalists earned a four-day surf camp experience with renowned surfers such as Aritz Aranburu, Indar Unanue, Iker Amatriain, and Rudy Palmboom.
On Saturday afternoon, the finals for the mixed under-10 team category and adaptive surfing were held. The winning team consisted of Helene Morris, Markel Artano, Jakes Ruiz Barrena, Adur Gonzalez-Etxabarri Martiartu, Ibon Treviño, and Aritz Flabeau. In the adaptive surfing category, Iker Osa was the winner.
