The Durango City Council will soon begin the comprehensive renewal of the trees on Zumar Kalea street, planting 46 new specimens. This initiative aims to enhance safety, bolster environmental quality, and advance climate adaptation in one of the town's primary urban arteries. The intervention addresses the progressive deterioration of many existing trees, which in recent years had increased risks for pedestrians and local users.
The project, developed by specialized arboriculture technicians, involves the removal of 24 trees in poor condition and their replacement with 46 new ones. The selection and distribution of species followed technical criteria to ensure healthy and sustainable growth, favoring specimens that can reach a medium-to-large size within a few years, thereby offering benefits similar to mature trees, such as increased shade, coolness, and improved environmental quality.
The project was awarded last May and has a budget of 158,980 euros, with an execution period of four months. The work will take place on the central median of Zumar Kalea and in two adjacent green areas, expanding the intervention's scope and reinforcing the presence of green infrastructure in this urban setting.
According to municipal projections, within approximately six years, the new trees are expected to have developed sufficiently to double the current shaded area, a factor considered crucial for improving thermal comfort and mitigating the impact of high summer temperatures.
Through this action, the Durango Council intends not only to enhance street safety and update its image but also to progress its sustainability and climate change strategy, creating greener and more pleasant spaces for citizens.
