Durango has announced two open sessions on June 20 and 27 to promote sports practice in the municipality's public parks. The initiative, named 'Kirola Kalera', aims to offer citizens opportunities for physical activity and allow local clubs and associations to develop their activities in public spaces.
The first session will take place on June 20 at Zuhatzola Park, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and will include activities related to archery, petanque, and adapted sports. The second event will be held on June 27 at Otamotzena, featuring rugby and gymnastics activities.
The City Council emphasizes that through this initiative, it seeks to transform public spaces into open and accessible sports venues, promoting street sports as a real, accessible, and inclusive option. It also aims to enhance the visibility of the municipality's sports associations, foster coexistence among different disciplines, and bring the clubs' work closer to citizens' daily lives.
“"Durango Kirola Kalera is born with the will to take sport out of sports facilities, making physical activity experienced in public spaces and making citizens feel them as their own."
The Councilor for Sports, Iker Txertudi, highlighted the project's importance, adding that "we want sport to be present in the daily life of the municipality, promoting its practice in streets, squares, and designated spaces, and promoting healthy lifestyle habits within everyone's reach".
He also noted that sports clubs and associations "are a fundamental pillar of local sport, not only for the activity they generate but also for their contribution to values education, social cohesion, and the construction of a shared sense of belonging." With this initiative, "we seek to give them greater visibility and, at the same time, bring their work closer to the citizens, inviting them to experience and enjoy sport in the street".
