By territory, births rose by 3.3% in Araba (after registering 2,163), 3.2% in Bizkaia (6,627 births), and 3.0% in Gipuzkoa (4,554 births). Monthly, the number of births mostly increased compared to 2024, except in May and July when they fell by 1.5% and 4.8% respectively. A notable increase of 10.2% in births was observed in December.
The birth rate in the BAC was 6 births per 1,000 inhabitants in 2025. By territory, Araba had the highest figure (6.4 per 1,000 births), followed by Gipuzkoa (6.3) and Bizkaia (5.7). This BAC rate increased by 0.2 percentage points compared to 2024.
By age, the largest number of births corresponded to women aged 35 to 39 (34%). The next largest group was women aged 30 to 34 (33.7%). Mothers aged 25 to 29 accounted for 14.1%, and those aged 40 or over for 11.2%. The 20 to 24 age group represented 5.8%, and teenage mothers accounted for 1.2%.
The average age of mothers was 33.4 years, the same as the previous year. However, this figure rose to 34.3 years for mothers of Spanish nationality and stood at 30.9 years for mothers of foreign nationality. The average age of women giving birth for the first time was 32.4 years.
Considering mothers' nationality, 26.7% were foreign, and they had 3,569 children. The main countries of origin for these mothers were Morocco, Colombia, Algeria, Pakistan, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Romania, Peru, Honduras, and Venezuela.
Foreign women had children at a younger age than Spanish nationals residing in the BAC: in 42.5% of cases before the age of 30, compared to 13.3% of Spanish mothers. The birth increase among foreign mothers was 3.7%, and among mothers born in Spain, it was 3.0%.
Unmarried mothers had 6,725 children in 2025, representing 50.4% of total births; in 2024, this figure was 50.6%, and in 2015, it was 41.6%. By birth order, first births accounted for 51.0%, second births for 35.1%, and third and subsequent births for 13.9%.
Among live births in 2025, there were 100 girls for every 105 boys. The average weight of boys was 3,339.2 grams, and for girls, it was 3,231 grams. 94.0% of births occurred in public hospitals, 5.3% in private hospitals, and 0.7% at home.
There were 13,183 deliveries, of which 12,977 were singletons, 203 were twins, and 3 were triplets. Premature births numbered 709 (5.4%).
