Amorebieta-Etxano will launch the new 'Gure Lurreko Merkatua' market on September 22 at the Zelaieta covered market. This weekly initiative aims to offer local products directly and strengthen the primary sector.

Starting September 22, Amorebieta-Etxano will host a new weekly market called Gure Lurreko Merkatua. The initiative aims to promote the consumption of local products, facilitate direct sales, and bring quality, seasonal food to citizens, thereby boosting the primary sector.
This initiative is driven by BIZKAIMENDI, the Federation of Rural Development Associations of Bizkaia, which has been developing this market model since 2014 in various municipalities in Bizkaia. In Amorebieta-Etxano, it is the result of collaboration between Urkiola Landa Garapen Alkartea, the Amorebieta-Etxano City Council, and local producers, aiming to create a stable space that meets the needs of the primary sector and consumers.
The market will take place every Tuesday, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Zelaieta covered market. The inaugural event is scheduled for September 22. The initiative seeks to become a reference point for healthy, seasonal local products while fostering new relationships between citizens, producers, and the rural environment.
A key objective of the market is to help market local products directly, without intermediaries. This aims to make the activity more profitable and sustainable, contributing to the economic viability of the agricultural and livestock sector. The Mayor of Amorebieta-Etxano emphasized: "We want to bring the primary sector closer to the daily life of the municipality and make it easier for the people of Zornotza to consume local products regularly. Above all, we want to highlight the work of our farmers and producers".
The mayor added that the weekly frequency will allow for the establishment of a more stable relationship between producers and consumers: "We don't want it to be a one-off event, but rather a space that is part of the municipality's life. A place to buy, but also to learn who is behind each product, how it is produced, and the work involved in the food we consume".
Erramun Osa, president of Urkiola Landa Garapen Alkartea, highlighted that "creating a space for direct interaction between producers and consumers is one of the greatest values of the Gure Lurreko Merkatua". This relationship allows for understanding the product, the work behind it, and recognizing the role of the primary sector in maintaining our territory and rural environment.
The new market will launch with eight stalls, prioritizing local producers and complementing the offering with producers from other municipalities in Bizkaia. Participating producers include: Ibarra Baserria (organic vegetables), Amorebieta-Etxano Iraunkor Elkartea (Km0 and organic products), Errotik Gaztaie (cow cheese and organic yogurts from their farm), Lusuri Gazta from Orozko (sheep cheese), Txorizoak de Urigoiti from Orozko (chorizo and pork derivatives), La Gilda del Norte from Lezama (specializing in gildas and piparras), Daonaz from Amoroto (organic black garlic), and Orbe Goikoa Baserria from Elorrio (farmhouse bread and artisan sweets).
To facilitate citizen access, the Zelaieta parking lot offers 150 spaces, with the first three hours being free. This initiative reinforces the city council's commitment to local commerce and the consumption of nearby products.
