The Hernani City Council has announced its decision not to grant the necessary permit for the construction of a hazardous chemical warehouse in the Lastaola industrial estate, following a technical analysis that deemed the project incompatible with current urban planning regulations.

The local institution spent several months reviewing the administrative file for the project, ultimately concluding that the proposed activity does not align with the municipality's urban planning rules. Consequently, a municipal activity license cannot be issued.
Urban planning regulations mandate specific areas for such industrial activities. In Hernani, beyond existing provisions, no new spaces are designated for these purposes. This prevents the authorization of projects classified as hazardous industries without explicit regulation within the general planning framework.

"The presented activity does not meet the requirements established in the current general regulations, therefore, the municipal license will not be granted."

The project was initially submitted in June 2024, and an environmental impact assessment was requested. The public information period, including the deadline for objections, concluded on April 10. Due to the hazardous nature of the activity, municipal technical services conducted a comprehensive review of the file.
This decision follows significant public concern, evidenced by the collection of over 700 signatures against the project. The local entity of Ereñotzu, an area near Epele where the warehouse was planned, had also publicly opposed the initiative.
