An event that occurred yesterday afternoon/evening in a residence on Urbasa street in Errenteria prompted a significant deployment of the Ertzaintza, Local Police, and firefighters. A man, approximately 50 years old, began throwing objects and furniture from his home, threatening to set it on fire, causing alarm among residents and maintaining a tense situation until nearly midnight.
The incidents began around 7:30 PM when the man, who does not habitually live there, arrived and started shouting and banging doors, then throwing items from the third-floor window. According to witnesses, one of the plates thrown hit a young person's arm in the park.
After the arrival of the Ertzaintza, access to the street was blocked, and an operation involving firefighters and medical personnel was established. Due to the fire threats, firefighters proceeded to cut off the gas supply to the entire building until the operation concluded.
Tensions escalated around 9:00 PM with the arrival of the man's mother, whom he was insulting and demanding sell the apartment. The woman could be heard shouting for help from inside. After nearly three hours, the Ertzaintza's intervention unit entered the apartment and arrested the man, aged 52. A mattress was placed under the balcony beforehand, as he had also threatened to jump.
Apparently, the detainee has a history of conflict. Neighbors indicated that he «has been to jail several times». The Ertzaintza confirmed that the man has 26 previous arrests and has been investigated on 55 occasions.
Police resources established a security perimeter that extended to adjacent streets and the park behind the building.
