The Basque Government has approved a grant of 900,000 euros to the Donostia International Physics Center Foundation (DIPC) to boost the Atenea supercomputer and strengthen the capabilities of the Euskadi Supercomputing Center.

The Governing Council, at the proposal of the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation, has awarded this subsidy. This new infrastructure will enhance the Center's calculation capacity and will serve to meet the growing demand from the scientific community.
Since 2019, the Supercomputing Center has operated as an open Basque infrastructure, offering high-performance computing resources to the entire Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation (RVCTI), as well as to other non-profit Basque scientific institutions. Its supercomputers enable complex simulations and calculations in fields such as advanced materials, fundamental physics, neuroscience, genetics, climate change, and artificial intelligence.
Furthermore, the Center contributes to the development of Euskadi's technological capabilities by providing specialized support for research and participating in initiatives related to quantum computing, within the framework of the Basque Quantum (BasQ) strategy.
The installation of the new Atenea supercomputer is necessary to continue advancing the strengthening of supercomputing in Euskadi, respond to the increasing demand from the research community, and promote hybridization between classical and quantum computing, leveraging the direct connection with the IBM Quantum System Two computer.
This aid is part of the strategy of the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation to strengthen Euskadi's scientific and technological capabilities, with special attention to infrastructures that provide advanced resources to the research community and drive scientific development.
The funding will help reinforce these capabilities in a context where supercomputing is fundamental for tackling increasingly complex research projects, processing large volumes of data, and advancing new scientific and technological solutions.
