The construction of a new parking building will mark the final major action in the urban development of Altzate, a comprehensive regeneration project that continues to progress after the completion of its third phase, as reported yesterday by the Errenteria City Council.
While this future infrastructure is being built, the plot where the parking facility will stand is being temporarily adapted as an OTA zone with 56 parking spaces. This measure aims to alleviate parking needs in the area while the definitive urbanization of the neighborhood is completed.
In fact, the conclusion of this third phase represents a new step in the consolidation of Altzate, whose works began in 2023 with the goal of completely transforming an old industrial area into a new residential, commercial, and service zone. This stage has seen the construction of 60 homes and an 82-room hotel, in addition to the completion of the urbanization of the Mari Zozaia promenade, which began in the second phase with the execution of the pedestrian bridge connecting both banks.
Furthermore, residents of numbers 11 and 13 on Altzate street have already begun to receive the keys to their homes as the buildings neared completion, allowing the new neighborhood to progressively come to life. Meanwhile, the new hotel establishment began its opening process at the end of April, thereby strengthening the area's accommodation offer and providing a new focus of economic activity.
The transformation of this former industrial site continues to take shape with the full opening of the new Mari Zozaia promenade, which completes a 5.4-kilometer pedestrian route around the Oiartzun River, in line with the Landscape Plan designed for this river axis. The action also incorporates over 10,000 square meters of green space and the restoration of 80 meters of riverbank through slope reprofiling and the planting of species adapted to tidal cycles, contributing to the environmental recovery of the area.
Likewise, the project has also allowed for the expansion of the bidegorri network with nearly 800 new meters of cycling path, linking the area with the Arditurri greenway and the municipality of Lezo. This connection improves sustainable mobility and facilitates pedestrian and bicycle travel between different points in the region.
The urban regeneration of Altzate is thus entering its final stretch according to the planned schedule. The development of the new parking building and the future Ahotsa eta Musikaren Etxea (House of Voice and Music) facility will put the finishing touch on one of the main urban transformations undertaken in the area in recent years, an intervention that has completely changed the image and uses of this urban area to make it a more livable, sustainable, and connected space with the natural environment of the Oiartzun River.
