The Errenteria City Council has significantly strengthened its social protection policy, increasing the budget for Social Emergency Aid (AES) by 113% since 2020, reaching 866,820 euros in 2025.

The Council highlights that this measure will guarantee access to these benefits for all eligible individuals, as the Basque Government's contribution has not increased despite rising demand. AES are aimed at vulnerable people to cover basic expenses such as electricity, water, heating, or rent.
The increase in prices in recent years, coupled with growing specific needs among groups such as minors and women, has driven the demand for these aids. In 2025, the number of beneficiaries in the town reached 1,194, a figure confirming the upward trend observed in previous years. The municipal budgetary effort has been crucial in responding to this increase.
According to municipal sources, comparatively, the Basque Government's contribution stands at 842,118 euros in 2025, a similar amount to previous years, which has forced the City Council to bear a greater economic burden. The municipal contribution, which exceeds the regional one, reflects this additional effort.
From a social perspective, data show that women and minors account for a significant portion of vulnerability situations. Of the total beneficiaries in 2025, 60% are women (716) and 40% are men (478). Of these, 69% were born in Spain.
Households with minors deserve special attention, where a significant increase in needs has been detected. In just two years, the number of minors benefiting from these aids has grown by 30%, leading the City Council to reinforce not only financial allocations but also socio-educational interventions within families. Coordination with schools has also been intensified to improve detection.
This reinforcement of emergency aid is part of a broader trend of increasing the budget allocated to social services. By 2026, the municipal contribution to social protection will grow by 12.6%, driven primarily by the increase in AES, the improvement of home care services, and the strengthening of resources for people in situations of or at risk of exclusion. With these measures, the Errenteria City Council consolidates its social protection strategy.
