Oñati has welcomed May by launching a prolonged season of festivities that will extend continuously until autumn. The town is preparing for months filled with celebrations across its various neighborhoods, with Olabarrieta officially inaugurating this extensive festive calendar.
The program in Olabarrieta will unfold over three days. On Wednesday, May 1, the day will combine tradition and festivity from the morning with a main mass, pelota semifinals, lunch, and traditional dances. In the afternoon, the intensity will rise with the txorimalos, culminating the night with concerts by Fronte Berria, Sueder, and Zatekeen erromeria, followed by DJs. A bus service will be available for transport to the neighborhood.
On Saturday, May 4, the rhythm will continue with a cross race in the morning, followed by a popular meal enlivened by bertsolaris (Basque improvisational poets) and trikitilaris (accordion players). Sunday, May 5, though seemingly calmer, will feature mass, pelota finals with award ceremonies, rural sports, a mus championship, children's games, and a raffle to conclude the weekend.
Following the Olabarrieta festivities, the San Miel Txikis will arrive from May 8 to 10. From then on, Oñati will enter a continuous festive dynamic, with its most prominent moments during Corpus Christi and, later, in September and October, with the Sanmigeles and Errosaixuak. Between these dates, a varied cultural, sports, and music agenda will ensure that weekends are rarely empty.
