Leintz Gatzaga will host the tenth edition of Salt Day on May 10, an event designed to highlight the culture and heritage of salt, as announced at a press conference held at the Salt Museum.

This initiative is organized through the collaboration of the Leintz Gatzaga City Council, the Debagoiena Commonwealth, and the Debagaraia Rural Development Association, with support from the Department of Mobility, Tourism, and Territorial Planning of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
During the presentation, the head of the Salt Museum emphasized the importance of salt culture, recalling that Leintz Gatzaga has been the only town in Gipuzkoa to produce salt, and that this production was reactivated in 2013. He stressed that the town's historical relationship with salt has left a fundamental heritage, without which the town's identity cannot be understood.

"In this sense, Salt Day arrives. This year we will celebrate it for the tenth time, and it is an opportunity to pay tribute to all that salt culture for one day."

Head of the Salt Museum
The mayor of Leintz Gatzaga and president of the Debagoiena Commonwealth, Dorleta Elkorobarrutia, explained that Salt Day is a deeply rooted initiative in the municipality, celebrating its tenth anniversary. She detailed that over the years, the event has undergone significant development, taking shape step by step and incorporating contributions from the public.
Elkorobarrutia also highlighted the importance of sustainability, stating that promoting it in rural areas is essential. She affirmed that while Gatzaga needs tourism, it must be sustainable, ensuring sustainability in mobility and the products offered.
The Provincial Deputy for Mobility, Tourism, and Territorial Planning, Azahara Domínguez, concurred with this vision and announced special Lurraldebus services to facilitate sustainable access to Salt Day. Domínguez emphasized that such initiatives not only promote Gipuzkoa but also spark the curiosity of those unfamiliar with the region's interior, increasing visitor numbers outside the summer months. She added that Debagoiena closed 2024 with 30% more visitors than in 2023, with this growth particularly notable during months of lower tourist activity.
To make reservations for Salt Day activities, interested parties should email infoturismo@debagoiena.eus or call 943 79 64 63. The program includes a market for salt and local products, mountain excursions, forest bathing, salt soap making workshops, tomato plant distribution, traditional wooden games, guided tours of the Salt Museum, showcooking, performances, and a popular meal.
