The Aretxabaleta City Council has opened the splash pad park in the Markole neighborhood, responding to citizen demand and to combat the heat.

Aretxabaleta now also has its splash pad park. It has been prepared in the Markole neighborhood and was opened on Wednesday afternoon. The City Council's intention was to open it in June, but due to the high temperatures in recent days, the opening date has been brought forward. It will be open daily, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and the jets will operate with a push-button system.
The City Council has indicated that, for now, the opening will be partial. "The splash pad project is completely finished, but we have not yet opened the grassy area surrounding the park. The grass is weak, it has not fully settled yet, and it is growing. Our fear was to open the entire area and damage the lawn. Therefore, for the moment, we have opened the splash pad park, and in June, when everything is completely ready, we will open the entire space," announced Aretxabaleta's mayor, Gari Iturbe.
Most towns in the valley have water parks, and in response to citizen requests, the Aretxabaleta City Council has decided to install one as well. "There was high demand for this. When there were heatwaves, people from Aretxabaleta used to go to the water jets in nearby towns, but now they will have the opportunity to play in their own town," said Iturbe. Furthermore, the mayor noted that it has become "a nice area": "It is an area in full sun, for better or worse. In the future, when the trees in the grass grow, the shade that is not present today will be appreciated".
On the opening day of the water park, many citizens gathered, and several highlighted that "there was a need for such a space, for days with high temperatures".
The City Council added that the goal is to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the splash pad park, so that users can lie on the ground and maintain "adequate hygienic conditions". Therefore, dogs will be prohibited from entering the water park.
Along with Aretxabaleta, Bergara also opened the water jets in Labegaraieta yesterday, and they will be available from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM onwards. In the case of Arrasate, the water parks will open next week, even though the opposition party PNV has requested their opening this week, considering the recent heat. In Oñati too, along with Arrasate, the jets will open next week, and in Antzuola, on the other hand, on June 8th. Finally, the City Councils of Eskoriatza and Aramaioko have not yet decided when they will open their water parks.
Looking ahead to the summer season, Arrasate and Bergara will open their outdoor pools on June 12th; regarding Oñati, lifeguard service will be available in Usako from June 20th onwards; and in Eskoriatza, the pool will open on July 2nd. The outdoor lawn, however, will be ready around mid-June.
