Mutriku is gearing up to celebrate its Galbaixo festivities, scheduled from the 13th to the 16th of this month. A highlight of the celebrations, the highly successful annual marmitako competition, will take place on September 15th, during the Galbaixo Txiki Eguna.
Individuals wishing to participate in the contest can register until September 2nd. Registrations are being accepted at the Albaro store or at Sabinan.
The City Council has announced that a maximum of 16 teams will be able to compete. If more teams register than available spots, participants will be selected by lottery. Each team can consist of up to two people and must prepare marmitako for 16 servings.
The organizers will provide each team with 3 kilograms of bonito tuna, 4.5 kilograms of potatoes, oil, and salt. Participants are responsible for bringing their own pot, cooking utensils, green or red pepper, chorizo-pepper, onion, bread, chili pepper, and tomato. Only additional vegetables are permitted as ingredients.
The marmitako contest will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Following the cooking, the jury will award the prizes at 2:00 PM, after which the prepared marmitako will be auctioned.
The jury will evaluate the appearance, color, broth, and flavor to determine the winners. The first-place winners will receive hats and 250 euros; the second-place winners, 175 euros and a cup; and the third-place winners, 100 euros and a cup.
