The mountains surrounding the urban area of Elgoibar will become the setting this Saturday for the mountain treks organized by the Morkaiko mendizale elkartea, as part of the 2026 Morkaiko Eguna. Once again, this event, established as the annual local mountaineering festival, is expected to be very well-attended.
It is estimated that around 600 people will participate in the mountain treks and the medal ceremony for Finalist Day. Registration for the treks was open until Wednesday evening, and by midday, about 520 people had already signed up: 250 for the long route of 40 kilometers with a 2,000-meter elevation gain, and approximately 270 for the shorter route of 15 kilometers with a 600-meter elevation gain.
“"250 for the long route and about 270 for the short 'little loop'."
Additionally, 83 children from the town will receive the Finalist Day medal at 13:30 in Kalegoen plaza. This event, which has been held since 2011 as part of Morkaiko Eguna, recognizes young mountaineers who have climbed 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, or 45 mountains over the past year.
Regarding bib collection, the Morkaiko mendizale elkartea reminds participants registered for the long mountain trek that they must carry their corresponding bib. Bibs can be collected on Friday (from 18:30 to 20:00) at the Morkaiko headquarters or on Saturday itself, from 5:15 to 5:45, in Kalegoen plaza. The organization recommends collecting them on Friday to facilitate distribution.
