The day began early in Zumaia. Participants in the photo rally sought the best images of the day, while people filled their bags with products from the market set up in Eusebio Gurrutxaga square.
The aromas emanating from the eight food stalls spread throughout the town attracted locals. Octopus skewers and octopus with potatoes, prepared voluntarily by various Zumaia organizations, were in high demand.
Gernika Park was the main gathering point in the morning. Children and teenagers enjoyed games organized by the Itxas Gain association. Later, at 11:00 AM, the riverbank filled with people to watch the batel boat race between crews, a nearly mandatory event during Olagarro Eguna.
The XVIII Olagarro Eguna Flag was at stake for the 40 participating teams in the race. A popular atmosphere was created both on the water and on the shore.
While the festivals centered around octopus focus on gastronomy and maritime culture, music also had its place in Zumaia. As people enjoyed their mid-morning snacks, txistularis (Basque flute players) and trikitilaris (Basque accordion players) enlivened the town's streets.
The festivities will continue in the afternoon: from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the Fish Market (Kofradia) will be open for visits. In the afternoon, octopus skewers will be available at the stalls. At 6:30 PM, the Hamarru elektrotxaranga (brass band) will parade through the streets. At 7:30 PM, the XVIII Olagarro Eguna Flag will be awarded to the batel race winners at the Cofradia, and at 10:30 PM, there will be a romeria (traditional Basque festival) with the group Sutargi.
