The Eibar City Council will begin the remodeling works of Txomo park next August, next to the San Andrés school. This action responds to the requests of local residents, who had repeatedly conveyed to Mayor Jon Iraola the need to improve and renovate the park. One of the project's objectives is to ensure peaceful coexistence between park users and neighborhood residents. To this end, the City Council's Works Department has studied various alternatives with the residents to agree on the most suitable one.
The work, currently out for tender, has a budget of €380,483.59 and an estimated execution period of 20 weeks, so it is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The park will retain its two play areas, one next to the school and another at the rear, and will feature new planters of various shapes and sizes to enhance its greenery and soften its configuration, as well as reorganize space usage.
Mayor Jon Iraola has thanked the residents for their work and dedication in developing the project. Iraola highlighted that the Txomo park project is part of a larger objective to renew and improve the municipality's urban spaces, a project underway for the past year. He emphasized the reurbanization of Arragüeta street and the rear section of San Juan street, both in progress, adding to the recently completed reurbanization of Bustinduitarren street.
“I want us to gradually see our streets renewed and our parks and recreational areas improved. In 2027, we want it to be the turn of Julián Etxeberria and the new space on the land currently occupied by the bullring.” Parks and recreational areas in the city are a priority.
Furthermore, Iraola stressed that improving existing parks and recreational areas, along with creating new spaces, are among his top priorities. To the Txomo project, the recently covered Urki Kurutzekua park has been added, a request from residents of the Urki neighborhood. Additionally, having covered spaces for children is a recurring demand, especially in winter, currently met by the park near the Courthouse in Txaltxa Zelai or with Errebal Plazia, soon to be joined by the covered plaza of the new Hijos de Gabilondo.
Moreover, the City Council will soon approve the improvement of the so-called "tube park," adjacent to the social center for retirees in Torrekua. This area is highly valued and frequented, particularly since the social center opened to the public. Therefore, in addition to a children's play area, a new pétanque zone will be incorporated, addressing another citizen request.
Finally, following the successful opening of the walkway over the tracks between Estaziño and Azitain, which has been well-received by Eibar residents, the City Council is finalizing an ideas competition for the space currently occupied by the bullring, aiming to transform it into the city's new flagship park. “We want quality spaces that meet the current needs of Eibar's citizens. They are our priority. Therefore, throughout 2026 and 2027, we will work to improve what we have and also to create new and modern recreational areas. This is our city model, and we are implementing it step by step,” concluded the mayor.
