The Municipal Office for Consumer Information (OMIC) in Eibar is relocating this Wednesday, October 21st, to one of the premises in Errebal Plazia. With this change, the City Council aims to increase the visibility of this municipal service, strengthen its presence in the city, and make it easier for citizens to access available resources for information and defense of their consumer rights.
The Mayor of Eibar, Jon Iraola, highlights the importance of bringing municipal services closer to citizens. "We want public services to be increasingly accessible and for citizens to know the resources at their disposal. The OMIC performs a fundamental role in advising and defending consumer rights, and this move will allow us to give greater visibility to a service highly valued by the people of Eibar."
For her part, the Councilor for Economic Development, Vanesa Hortas, emphasizes that "the OMIC offers very useful assistance to resolve doubts and help consumers assert their rights. By moving to Errebal Plazia, we want to strengthen the service and bring it even closer to citizens, taking advantage of a reference space in Eibar so that more people can learn about its work and turn to it when needed."
The OMIC provides information, guidance, and support for problems related to contracts, bills, utilities, and other consumer services. It also works in coordination with Kontsumobide, the Basque Institute of Consumption.
The OMIC's activity reflects the importance of this service. During 2025, the office handled a total of 1,381 inquiries and processed 220 complaints, compared to 163 the previous year, representing a significant increase in formal complaints.
Telecommunications were the sector that generated the most complaints, accounting for 30% of the total, followed by energy with 25%. Among the main problems detected are issues with internet and television services, errors in utility bills, non-transparent contracts, and charges for unsolicited services.
The office also conducted informational activities to help citizens understand their rights and make more informed decisions. Among these, a talk held in December on the differences between the free and regulated markets for electricity and gas stood out.
Furthermore, the consolidation of the appointment system has improved the organization of attention. Telephone consultations increased from 275 in 2024 to 594 in 2025, almost doubling, thanks to more efficient management of calls and user needs.
Following the relocation, the OMIC leaves its previous location on the ground floor of the Town Hall and will provide its services from the Errebal Plazia premises. The usual opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 14:00, by appointment.
Residents registered in Eibar can request information or make an appointment by calling 943 20 38 43, emailing omic-kiub@eibar.eus, or visiting in person at the Town Hall's concierge desk.
