This position has faced several challenges in the last two years. In February 2024, the previous chief was removed from office with the aim of taking steps towards achieving a “community-oriented police force.” A process to select a new head was then initiated, but it was prolonged for several months as two candidates declined the position.
Eventually, Jon Agirrebengoa Barturen, who had previously been the head of the Deusto Police Station, took office in November of that year. However, he remained in the post for less than three months, resigning in February of last year to return to his previous role. Consequently, the new selection process now underway seeks to fill this vacancy, which has lasted for over a year.
Advising the mayor and the government team on matters specific to the Local Police, planning the activities of the agents under their responsibility, and organizing and supervising the service are the main functions of the new head.
As specified by the Laudio City Council, the new official will be responsible for the following functions: advising the mayor and the government team on Local Police matters, planning the activities of the agents under their charge, organizing and supervising the service, coordinating both within and outside the municipality, ensuring adequate and updated training for police officers, processing municipal files, complying with judicial requirements, and attending to citizens and resolving inquiries.
Interested parties have until April 27 to register for the process. Applications can be submitted through the City Council's website or at the Citizen Attention Service.
