This morning, a helicopter was deployed, and more are expected to join throughout the day. Yesterday, five helicopters and 70 personnel were involved in the firefighting efforts. Local authorities have emphasized the need to learn from this experience and make future preparations.
The Lantenio Administrative Board has warned of expected winds of 35 kilometers per hour from 4 PM onwards, which could impact the fire's progression. "There are active hotspots and considerable work remains to be done," they added.
The fire started on Monday in the forest of Mount Idubaltza. Although initially controlled, the blaze reignited on Thursday afternoon, prompting the Basque Government to activate emergency phase 0 of the Special Plan for Forest Fire Risk.
This incident has also spurred acts of solidarity. Members of Amurrio's Txosna Solidaria will donate all collected funds to the Lantenio Council. Additionally, a bank account has been opened for donations: 2095 4408 54 1095224951 (Kutxabank), using "Lagundu Llanteno" as the reference.
The fire has not caused personal injuries, although several farmhouses had to be evacuated. Environmentally, it is estimated that between 75 and 100 hectares of forest have been burned.
