Gernika-Lumo will honor its senior citizens this Saturday, May 16, with the 17th edition of its popular community meal. The event will take place at the emblematic Jai Alai fronton starting at 2:30 PM, and is expected to bring together nearly a thousand attendees in a day designed to foster coexistence and recognition for the elderly residents of the municipality.
What began almost two decades ago as a simple act of camaraderie has transformed, over the years, into an essential social event for the chartered town. The pensioners' meal in Gernika-Lumo is not just a festive occasion; it is a space where the living memory of the municipality is spontaneously activated. As highlighted by the Town Council, participation figures remain stable edition after edition, demonstrating the deep roots and consolidation of an initiative defined by the local administration as an "exercise in social continuity".
“"The Town Council reaffirms its commitment to active aging connected with the community, recognizing those who have been protagonists in local development."
To facilitate attendance and ensure that no one is excluded for economic reasons, the Town Council has set a symbolic price of three euros for admission. This fee aims to promote the inclusive nature of the event, recognizing the fundamental role this group has played in local development.
Tickets to attend the Jai Alai are already available at usual points of sale. Interested individuals can purchase them at the Third Age Center of Pasealekua, as well as at various collaborating establishments in the municipality: San Cristóbal, Twente, Auzokoa, and Santanape. With the organization finalizing details, Gernika-Lumo is preparing to experience one of its most emotional days, where music, humor, and a good atmosphere will not be lacking.
