The first bonito of the season were landed early this morning in the port of Bermeo and sold for an average of 10.40 euros per kilo. The fishing vessel 'Almikeko Ama' brought in 1,700 kilos after 25 days of work in the Azores.
Sources from the Biscay quay indicated that this is not an abundant catch after so many days at sea, but it is what is available for now. Fishermen hope the fishing season will pick up soon, as "many families depend on species like mackerel and tuna." They added that "we have to continue, restock supplies, and return to sea."
Fishmongers, in turn, expect landings to increase to lower the price of one of the most sought-after species by customers, which in the initial days has been sold for over 30 euros per kilo.
The fishermen are already looking towards the second half of June and are optimistic about a good season, during which they will have more than enough quota, which they will practically be unable to complete.
The total allowable catch (TAC) set for the community fleet amounts to 47,251 tons, of which nearly 28,000 tons correspond to vessels from the Cantabrian Sea operating under the Spanish flag. French and Irish vessels will be able to catch 8,791 and 4,959 tons, respectively.
Last week, two other vessels from the Biscay fleet, the 'Goienkale' and 'María Digna Dos', broke the record for the price of initial landings at the Avilés fish market, selling the first batch (89.50 kilos) for 398 euros per kilo, a figure more than triple that recorded last year in the same location.
