The festivities in Ugao officially commenced today, September 6th, around 1:00 PM. The association Bizi Muina Elkartea delivered this year's proclamation, followed by the launch of the chupinazo from the town hall balcony by the local mayor, Ekaitz Mentxaka, in front of all the residents.
This year, the proclamation was made by Bizi Muina Elkartea, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of bone marrow donation. Members of the collective, such as Joseba Urrutikoetxea and Arkaitz Santamaria, expressed their gratitude for the invitation. Santamaria stated, "It was unthinkable that we would be invited to read the proclamation this year. We are very happy." Additionally, families from Ugao with relatives living with rare diseases will be special guests at the festivities, participating in the traditional 'Bolari bira' at the end of the celebrations.
The festivities will run until September 14th, and as a new initiative this year, there will be no fireworks ('trakas') at the end of the celebrations. The City Council explained that this measure aims to show solidarity with individuals affected by autism. Furthermore, the 'Punto Morado' (Purple Point) will be relocated to the Gazteleku, where a professional team will provide support in case of potential aggressions.
Mayor Ekaitz Mentxaka highlighted that over the nine days, there will be more than 70 activities to enjoy, combining culture, music, gastronomy, sports, and events for the entire family. A comprehensive program has been organized with the collaboration of the Festival Committee, associations, and the community.
Additionally, a mobile office for renewing National Identity Documents (DNI) and passports will be available in Ugao on September 30th, October 29th, November 26th, and December 28th, located in the Plaza del Pueblo. Residents will need to register in advance, either in person or by phone.
The photographic project 'Silver Panty' by local artist Argiñe Ceballos will also be exhibited at the Arizko Dorretxea in Basauri, as part of the traveling exhibition Ertibil Bizkaia 2026.
