A Barakaldo court has ordered the release of a 61-year-old man who threatened a municipal officer with a knife, an incident that led the officer to shoot him in the leg on Friday afternoon.

A Barakaldo court has released a 61-year-old man who threatened a municipal officer with a knife. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, near the train station, around 7:00 PM, when a shopkeeper reported a robbery at his establishment in the El Carmen neighborhood.
Police units promptly arrived at the scene and, after gathering information about the suspect's appearance, began their search. Shortly after, the man, a Spanish national with numerous prior offenses for similar acts, was located on the footbridge connecting the station to the Urban area. When officers attempted to stop him, the individual threatened them with a knife.
Initially, the officers deployed a taser to try and subdue the assailant, but the thickness of his clothing protected him from the electrical discharge. The man's aggressive stance persisted, as he continued to brandish the bladed weapon. Ultimately, under circumstances still being clarified, a shot was fired, striking him in the leg.
The man received immediate medical attention at the scene, where paramedics applied a tourniquet to prevent blood loss. He was then transported to Cruces Hospital in stable condition and out of danger, with a minor injury. Ertzaintza resources later arrived and took charge of the incident, adhering to protocol for jurisdiction and transparency. The man remained at the hospital under arrest for robbery with violence and assault on an authority figure.

"The police union Euspel has criticized the decision, filing a complaint to investigate the man for attempted homicide against an authority figure, a crime punishable by 15 years in prison. The union has also announced its intention to appeal the provisional release order."
