The rector elections at EHU, held on November 26, 2024, saw Eva Ferreira's team garner 36.3% of the votes, while Joxerramon Bengoetxea's candidacy achieved a majority of 63.6%. Nevertheless, several members of the losing team have now been appointed to significant roles, mostly linked to the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Basque Government.
Among these appointments is Lore Bilbao, who served as manager at EHU from 2023 to 2024 and has now been named general director of Osakidetza. Despite her specialization in Industrial Engineering and Management, this marks her first experience in the healthcare sector. Begoña Loza, former deputy personnel manager at EHU, was appointed director of People at OSI Barrualde-Galdakao on February 21, 2025.
Furthermore, Héctor Hernando, former deputy manager of EHU's Bizkaia Campus, became managing director of Osatek (a public entity under the Department of Health) on January 31, 2025. Miren Mateo, former deputy manager of the Araba Campus, was appointed chief of staff to the Minister of Science, University, and Innovation of the Basque Government, Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, on January 11, 2025. Three other members of Ferreira's former administration at EHU are also currently working in Pérez Iglesias's cabinet.
Gorane Agirre, Ferreira's former chief of staff, was appointed institutional communication advisor for the Basque Government's Department of Science, University, and Innovation on July 3, 2025. Juanjo Untzilla, former vice-rector for Digital Transformation and Communication, has been an advisor for Policy and Programs in the same department since March 20, 2025.
Federico Recart, former rector for Teaching Staff and Researchers, and director of Planning and Staffing since 2012, secured the position of director of the Basque University System Quality Agency (Unibasq) last November. Finally, Juncal Gutiérrez, former vice-rector for Basque Language, Culture, and Internationalization, was appointed director of the Institute for the Evaluation and Research of the Non-University Educational System on December 22, and Agustin Erkizia, former vice-rector of the Gipuzkoa Campus, obtained the position of coordinator of Science and Knowledge at the Donostia City Council in July 2025, a role created by former mayor Eneko Goia.
