Euskadi will lead the development of the new generation of trans-European high-speed trains thanks to the transformative project “BasqTrain 35” led by Talgo.

This project, part of the Industry Plan – Euskadi 2030, aims to address the fragmentation of the European railway system by designing a modular and sustainable train capable of operating across different countries, thereby reducing production costs and facilitating cross-border mobility.
The initiative is expected to generate over 140 highly skilled jobs in Euskadi, with a total investment of 105 million euros over three years, of which 78 million will be allocated to R&D.
The project, spearheaded by Talgo, will engage 12 Basque companies, 10 of which are SMEs. It will also benefit from the collaboration of the MAFEX cluster and involve agents from the Basque Network of Science, Technology, and Innovation, led by CEIT.
The presentation event was attended by the General Deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, the Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, and the President of Talgo, José Jainaga, among other authorities.
Etxanobe highlighted Bizkaia as a territory of innovation, capable of transforming the ambition to design future trains into a tangible project by incentivizing R&D, supporting industrial financing, and attracting talent.
Mikel Jauregi stated that the sustainable mobility sector is a driving force in the Industry Plan, and this project aims for a significant leap in the development of proprietary high-speed technologies.
José Antonio Jainaga, President of Talgo, emphasized that the BASQTRAIN 35 project strengthens Euskadi's railway leadership and the necessity of continuous innovation to compete globally.
Ingeteam will develop solutions for the next-generation trains, leveraging its expertise in power electronics and energy management, thereby enhancing energy efficiency and optimizing maintenance.
In addition to this project, the Industry Plan – Euskadi 2030 includes 25 Transformative Projects, with 19 already underway: 11 led by the public sector and 8 by the private sector. These initiatives collectively mobilize over 965 million euros and are projected to create more than 3,990 quality jobs.
