Bilbao's El Arenal will become the epicenter of Basque txakoli this weekend with the second edition of Txin Txin Fest. Promoted by the Denominación de Origen Bizkaiko Txakolina, the gastro-cultural event will gather 22 wineries and more than 60 txakoli references on Saturday and Sunday, May 16th and 17th.
The event, supported by the Bilbao City Council, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Government, and Laboral Kutxa, aims to establish itself as a key event merging wine, gastronomy, music, and contemporary culture around one of the region's most representative products.
A central highlight of the festival will be the appointment of actress and filmmaker Fariba Sheikhan as the Mezulari (Ambassador) for the 2025 vintage. This symbolic figure acts as an ambassador for the new harvest and the values associated with the origin denomination. The organization emphasizes that her selection strengthens the festival's connection with the cultural sphere and with "diversity and dialogue between identities".
The official presentation of the new vintage will take place on Saturday at 12:00 PM, led by Davide Dall’Amico, sommelier at the Mina restaurant in Bilbao.
The president of D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina, Isabel Viñas, highlights that the festival reflects the "evolution" of Basque txakoli, a product "deeply linked to the territory" but capable of connecting with new audiences through culture and gastronomy.
Throughout the two days, specialized tastings will be conducted by professionals from the wine and gastronomic sectors, including Silvia Landeira, Galder Madariaga, Elena Urigüen, and Iratxe Rementeria. Sessions will cover topics such as the Atlantic character of txakoli, the influence of soil on single-vineyard wines, stylistic diversity, and the aging potential of this wine. All tastings will include Idiazabal cheese and will be open to the general public.
The cultural program is rounded out with musical performances and street shows by groups such as Txalamakilak, Mogumbo Brass Band, Bilboko Gaiteroak, and Euskorleans, as well as a children's area called Txiki Txoko.
