Mayor Amaia del Campo has firmly stated that Barakaldo City Council will not tolerate threats to either residents or the Local Police. Therefore, she has instructed municipal legal services to request the re-entry into provisional prison for the detainee and for the council to act as a private prosecutor for the assault on authority figures.
“"We will not allow a criminal to threaten with a knife either the residents of this town or the Local Police of Barakaldo."
The events took place on April 4, when the Barakaldo Local Police arrested a man after he threatened officers with a knife. Amaia del Campo emphasized that, given the individual's history of reoffending in the locality, "the facts are serious enough to request re-entry into provisional prison to prevent new risks to both citizens and local agents."
According to a statement from the City Council, the incident occurred after a report of an alleged robbery at a commercial establishment by the detainee. Faced with the individual's threatening behavior, displaying a knife and acting violently towards the officers present, the operation concluded with one of the police officers shooting the detainee in the leg, thus causing him to drop the knife and allowing for his arrest.
