The city of Irun will be the venue for an institutional event honoring the victims of exile, organized by the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory. The event will take place this coming Friday, May 8, at the Ficoba auditorium, starting at 11:30 AM, with the goal of highlighting Irun and the Avenida Bridge as significant locations in the commemoration of democratic memory.
The tribute will remember the victims and their families, and will feature musical performances, dance, and video projections. The institutional representation of the Spanish Government will be led by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, bringing together authorities, public representatives, and entities linked to democratic memory.
This event follows the declaration and placement of a plaque on the Avenida Bridge as a site of democratic memory on January 30. This marks the fourth time such an event has been held, following those organized in 2023 in the French locations of Le Perthus, Argelès-sur-Mer, and Collioure, and in 2024 in Alicante and Avilés.
With this initiative, Irun seeks to strengthen its role as a space for memory and encounter, contributing to keeping alive the memory of exile victims and promoting democratic values among citizens. The Irun City Council invites those interested in attending the event to register in advance via email at protocolo@irun.org, providing their personal details, to facilitate organization and access to the event.
