Following the kick-off with the Meaka festivities last month, Irun's neighborhood festivals embark on their particular marathon. The neighborhoods will be filled with color, thanks primarily to the efforts of volunteers who keep them alive with great enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work. This weekend it's Larreaundi's turn, but the activity is already picking up pace until after the summer.
The organization of these festivals is not an easy task. One of the main headaches is the calendar, trying to ensure they don't overlap, especially when they are in nearby neighborhoods. Additionally, care is taken to avoid clashes with certain events organized by the Irun City Council. Finally, events must be coordinated with various entities.
“"People come, but we would like them to collaborate more. We receive €70,000 for cultural activities in the neighborhoods, to be distributed among the 18 neighborhood associations."
Organizers are requesting more assistance from the Council. Often, they apply for permits at least a month in advance, and frequently they are granted on the last day. The intention is not to reduce these procedures, but to review them earlier so that if anything is missing, it can be resolved in time. Despite all this work, some hands continue to strive for recreational and cultural events to maintain their presence throughout Irun, and for the unique essence of each neighborhood to be preserved. There is no lack of desire, only a request for more hands and resources. The call has been made.
