Homeowners in Irun have brought an end to a long and arduous twelve-year process to reclaim their property and sell it to the Irun City Council, overcoming numerous obstacles.

The owners of a property in Irun have concluded a twelve-year process to resolve an occupation situation. The ordeal began in 2014 when the owners discovered that Irun City Council's Municipal Plan prevented them from either renovating or selling the house. Faced with this, they proposed that the council acquire it, but initially received no response.
In 2023, following the hospitalization of one of the owners, the problem resurfaced, and they again requested the council to purchase the home. In 2024, through the intervention of the Ararteko, the Irun City Council took action and made an offer. Although an agreement was reached, it was later revealed that the owners had not accepted their parents' inheritance and that the house had carried a mortgage since 1930.
After overcoming these impediments, final approval was obtained from the council, with the condition that the property be vacant. Coincidentally, months earlier, with the hospitalization of one of the owners, the property was occupied. The Ertzaintza intervened on several occasions to evict the occupants, but the judicial processes were slow and complicated, and the owners were often not notified of hearings.
During this prolonged process, the owners also faced personal difficulties, including the loss of family members, which further delayed procedures. Occupants repeatedly returned to the house, and in August 2025, after a new occupation, an Ertzaintza agent informed them that nothing could be done, as the house had been declared a 'dwelling,' despite them having been there for only one day. Finally, this Wednesday, when the eviction was to proceed, the house was already empty, as the Ertzaintza had previously notified the occupants.
The owners have stated that this process has had a significant impact on their health and well-being, suffering more than three years of insomnia and losing eight kilograms. Finally, the Irun City Council and the Irun Local Police have coordinated the surveillance of the property and ordered its fencing, bringing a definitive end to the process.
