The Department of Sustainable Mobility of the Basque Government, through Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS), has awarded the urbanization works for General Álava and Independencia streets in Vitoria-Gasteiz for 2.3 million euros.

These streets form part of the city's common tram line. The project involves replacing the surface finishes of the entire existing urbanization section, with the exception of the pedestrian sidewalks on General Álava street.
This intervention is the result of an agreement reached with the City Council to improve the integration between different public and private transport modes in the central commercial artery. The project, developed by the City Council's Public Space department and ETS technicians, proposes a homogeneous solution for the paving of General Álava and Independencia streets, unifying existing finishes (bituminous concrete, mastic asphalt, and stamped concrete), adapting urban elements to the new urbanization, and rehabilitating the drainage system. Additionally, a section of both roads will be renewed at the confluence of Independencia, General Álava, and Fueros streets, and approximately 20 manholes will be repaired.
Preliminary works necessary before the tram service cut will be carried out in July, with the interruption beginning after the La Blanca festivities conclude. During this period, Euskotren will offer its usual service across the entire network, except for the section between the Parlamento and Angulema stations. Nevertheless, circulation and access to garages will be maintained at all times, aiming to improve the permeability and integration of the tram system within the urban environment between the intersection of Independencia and La Paz streets and the Parlamento tram stop.
Of the total budget, 530,000 euros will be allocated to tram improvements, while 2.1 million euros will be directed towards enhancing integration, including actions on paving, sidewalk sanitation, renewal of urbanization elements and street furniture in pedestrian areas, as well as modernizing the separation and protection bollards between both areas, in addition to matters related to preliminary works, waste management, and health and safety.
