This initiative, to be executed by the Basque Government, aims to enhance the street's current appearance, addressing the 'patchwork' impression left by previous renovations. The works will be carried out in two main phases to minimize disruption to daily city life.
The first phase will begin in July with preparatory tasks, during which city activities will continue as normal. The second, more intensive phase, will start after the La Blanca festivities, leading to the aforementioned tram service suspension. The City Council has assured that, despite the construction, traffic flow and access to local residents' garages will be maintained at all times.
The renovation seeks to unify the street surfaces, which currently feature up to three different finishes. Key improvements include new paving across the entire section, excluding the sidewalks of General Álava street. Additionally, approximately twenty manholes will be repaired, and the entire drainage system will be rehabilitated to prevent puddles and subsidence. The crucial intersection where Independencia, General Álava, and Fueros streets converge will also be renewed.
The project also includes the renewal of urban furniture, such as benches and waste bins, and the modernization of the protective bollards for the tramway. Out of the total 2.3 million euro allocation, 2.1 million euros will be dedicated to improving integration, covering paving, sidewalk sanitation, and the renewal of urban elements in pedestrian areas. The remaining 530,000 euros will be specifically invested in modernizing and enhancing the tram platform.
