Basque Government Highlights Euskera as a Strength for Future Building

The Minister of Education participated in the Araba Euskaraz 2026 event in Amurrio, themed 'Taupadak berpiztu!'.

The Basque Government has underscored the Basque language, Euskera, as a vital strength for building Euskadi's future, during its participation in the Araba Euskaraz 2026 event in Amurrio.

Amurrio, June 14, 2026.- The Minister of Education, Begoña Pedrosa, participated this morning in the opening ceremony of Araba Euskaraz 2026, the festival of Álava's ikastolas organized this year by Aresketa Ikastola in Amurrio under the slogan “Taupadak berpiztu!”. Also in attendance were the Deputy General of Álava, Ramiro González; the mayor of Amurrio, Txerra Molinuevo; the president of Aresketa Ikastola, Josu Barrenengoa; and the president of Araba Euskaraz, Unai Mendizabal.
During her speech, Pedrosa emphasized the importance of strengthening the bonds that hold Basque society together and of continuing to build a strong community amidst social change and growing diversity. “Our challenge is to look to the future and remain a strong and cohesive community,” she stated. “Societies advance when they are capable of incorporating different people, different experiences, and new ways of seeing the world,” she affirmed, advocating for an open, cohesive society capable of building community through diversity.
Euskera, a strength for building the future
In her address, the minister highlighted Euskera as a strength for Euskadi's future. She indicated that it is the language of this land and an expression of Basque society's culture and worldview. “Euskera is what we are and also what we aspire to be,” she stated.
Pedrosa also focused on the students and the daily work carried out in educational centers. “The Euskadi of the coming decades is already growing in our classrooms,” she emphasized. She added: “Every day, we have reasons to trust the individuals growing up in those classrooms”.
Furthermore, she acknowledged the decades-long contribution of ikastolas to Euskera, education, and community building. In this regard, she particularly highlighted the role played by Aresketa Ikastola in Amurrio and Aiaraldea as an example of the collective commitment of several generations to education, Basque culture, and the transmission of Euskera.
Araba Euskaraz 2026
The 2026 edition offers a wide program of cultural, musical, sports, and family activities for all audiences. With concerts, shows, workshops, children's activities, and festive spaces spread across various points in Amurrio, Araba Euskaraz has established itself as one of the main annual events supporting Euskera and the ikastolas of Araba.
