The Jesús Obrero sports center was the scene of a significant local sporting event last weekend, hosting the semifinals and final of the Álava Women's Master League. The competition was marked by excitement, a great atmosphere in the stands, and a high level of play, culminating in Egibide's second consecutive championship title.
Four teams reached the decisive phase, each with strong arguments to contend for the title. Egibide aimed to defend its crown, Corazonistas presented a combative and competitive squad, Las Margas entered after an impressive regular season, and Txidoki, making its debut, arrived without inhibitions and eager to surprise.
The first semifinal pitted Egibide, the second seed, against Corazonistas, who were just two points behind in the standings. The atmosphere already signaled a great afternoon, with the stands packed with family, friends, and other league teams. On the court, the reigning champions asserted their experience from the outset, demonstrating superior accuracy and control of the game's pace to secure a decisive 51-24 victory. The top scorer of the match was Fernández, number 11, with 12 points.
The other semifinal saw Las Margas, regular season leaders, face Txidoki, the fourth seed and a newcomer. On paper, Las Margas were the favorites, but the game unfolded differently. The debutant team played with courage, intensity, and character, delivering the weekend's biggest upset with a final score of 34-44, securing their spot in the final. Gardoki, number 10 for Txidoki, particularly shone with 17 points and three three-pointers.
Sunday's midday final brought together two teams with contrasting dynamics but equal ambition. Egibide sought to revalidate its title, while Txidoki aimed to cap off a dream debut season, proving that their presence in the decisive match was no fluke. From the opening tip-off, competitive tension filled Jesús Obrero. Every possession was fiercely contested, with both teams highly focused and the crowd fully engaged. At halftime, the home team led 25-18, a valuable but not insurmountable lead in such a closely matched competition.
In the second half, the players of the winning team skillfully managed their advantage, maintaining control of the game and delivering crucial blows at decisive moments to seal a 44-38 victory. The final buzzer brought celebration and euphoria from their supporters. Txidoki fought until the last second, forcing the champions to maintain their intensity throughout the game.
Egibide was crowned two-time champion of the Álava Women's Master League after a very solid final phase. Fernández, with 14 points, once again proved to be the offensive leader for the champions and the most outstanding player in the final. For Txidoki, Medina, number 4, stood out with 9 points.
Beyond the results, the weekend clearly demonstrated the excellent health of women's master basketball in Álava. Competition, camaraderie, full stands, and teams with distinct identities converged in an event that once again made Jesús Obrero the epicenter of local sports.
