Many families wish for their children to gain independence but worry about their ability to ask for help if something happens. To address this concern, Altxa Burua Araba proposes a network of shops where minors can make a call without needing their own phone.
Participating establishments will display a yellow sticker on their window. This sign indicates that a child can enter if they are lost, feeling unwell, have had an accident, or urgently need to contact their family. Shop staff will make the call from their own phone, free of charge and within the premises.
Altxa Burua Araba, composed of families and health and education professionals, works to delay smartphone adoption and promote technology use based on educational and health criteria. This network is designed for real need situations, not for ordinary calls.
The campaign already includes shops in neighborhoods such as San Martín, Salburua, Arana, Aranbizkarra, and Alde Zaharra. Recently, approximately 150 establishments across Álava have joined. Participating shops receive basic guidelines, and staff assess the necessity of the call before contacting the minor's family or designated guardian.
The network is also planned to extend to other community spaces, including civic centers, libraries, health centers, BIZAN centers, sports centers, cultural centers, associations, and sports clubs. The goal is to create a support network on the street, enabling minors to gain autonomy without relying solely on mobile phones.
The initiative is supported by Fundación Vital, which has funded the campaign materials. Interested shops or entities can contact them via email at [altxaburuaaraba@gmail.com](mailto:altxaburuaaraba@gmail.com).
