The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava's sports community are celebrating the official presentation of the Vitoria-Gasteiz BTT Basque Country, a new sporting event scheduled for the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd at Olarizu Park.

The presentation was attended by Ana López de Uralde, delegated councilor for the Department of Sports, Health and Development Cooperation of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council; Gorka Iturriaga, director of Physical Activity and Sports for the Basque Government; Eduardo Martínez, promoter of the competition; and Aitor Saénz de Cámara, event director. All emphasized the ambition for this cycling event to become a benchmark in the international BTT calendar.

"It is a true pleasure to present today an event that marks a before and after for sports in our city."

López de Uralde highlighted that the event offers a unique opportunity to broaden the city's international image and showcase Vitoria-Gasteiz's commitment to sports, sustainability, and quality of life. According to the councilor, Olarizu Park provides “perfect conditions for the occasion” and will allow attendees to enjoy the local landscape, culture, and gastronomy.
For his part, Gorka Iturriaga, representative of the Basque Government, noted that BTT and gravel could make Vitoria and Álava one of Europe's most important locations for these disciplines. He added that the event is an excellent opportunity to highlight the rural environment of both the city and the province.
Organizers Eduardo Martínez and Aitor Saénz de Cámara provided further details. Martínez revealed that organizing the event took “practically three years,” originating from a meeting at the Europa Palace at the beginning of the current mayor's term, where the need to attract new international sports events to Vitoria was emphasized. The competition, currently classified at UCI C2 level, aims to evolve into a BTT World Cup event in Vitoria within three to four years, following the trajectory of the Vitoria Triathlon.
Finally, Saénz de Cámara, the event's general director, announced that this first edition will feature 800 participants. Of these, 300 will compete in the Shimano Super Cup Massi on Saturday, May 2nd, an Olympic Cross Country event that awards points for the UCI ranking. On Sunday, May 3rd, the BTT Marathon (competitive and Open category) and the Half Marathon (Open and E-Bikes category) races will take place. Due to a clash with the BTT World Cup in South Korea, a large international representation is not expected for this inaugural edition.
