Vitoria-Gasteiz experienced two serious traffic accidents on Sunday afternoon, within an hour of each other, resulting in several injuries and forcing the closure of the A-1 motorway in both directions.

The first incident took place on the N-104, near Arkaute, around 4:00 PM. Two vehicles were involved in a collision that, according to the Álava Firefighters, left six people injured. Emergency services, including ambulances, Ertzaintza patrols, and fire personnel, were dispatched to the scene. An Osakidetza helicopter was also mobilized but ultimately not required.
The injured were treated on-site and subsequently transported to a hospital. As of now, no further details regarding the severity of their injuries have been released. The accident led to significant emergency vehicle activity in the area throughout much of the afternoon, near Ilarratza, one of the common access points to Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Barely an hour later, a second accident occurred on the A-1 motorway, near Abetxuko, heading towards Madrid, specifically at kilometer 325. In this case, a vehicle veered off the road, and one person became trapped inside, necessitating the intervention of firefighters. According to the Department of Security, the injured person initially presented with serious conditions.
An Osakidetza helicopter was also mobilized for this incident but was ultimately not needed. The injured person was transported by ambulance to Txagorritxu Hospital. This accident forced the closure of the A-1 in both directions for a period, causing traffic jams on one of the main routes into the city.
The day also saw a third incident within Vitoria-Gasteiz. Early in the morning, a car overturned on Honduras Street, heading towards the Latin America roundabout. In this instance, no one was trapped inside the vehicle, but the Local Police and Firefighters responded. The causes of this incident are currently unknown.
