Beatriz Artolazabal, deputy mayor of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, has acknowledged that measures adopted for environmental benefit, such as allowing grass to grow, can "occasionally have an aesthetic consequence." As part of the project to improve soil quality in the city's gardens, grass was allowed to grow and mowing was reduced in some areas to promote pollination and root development. This strategy was maintained until May 8th, after which mowing has resumed as agreed.
Artolazabal has expressed confidence that soon "areas with tall grass will regain their normal appearance." She also admitted that spring has contributed to vegetation growth beyond what was desired, but she is hopeful of "gradually returning to normality."
In recent weeks, several residents of Vitoria-Gasteiz have voiced complaints about the poor condition of the city's lawns. In some instances, the situation has evoked memories of the 2025 gardeners' strike, but the municipal official clarified that this is not a labor dispute, but rather a "purely natural" explanation behind the current circumstances.
